Troubleshooter for all Archos 04 and 05 players

- My Archos will not
boot up.

1. Make sure the unit is fully charged. Plug it into a USB port , using a desktop PC if possible (it can give more power than a laptop) or use an AC outlet if you have an AC charger for the unit, a mini dock, battery dock or the DVR station. These will give more power to the unit and may allow it to charge more fully than a USB connection.

I tried step 1, and I still have the same problem:
2. For the 405 605 & 705 models: Reset the unit. On the 405 and 605 there is a small hole on the bottom of the unit. Use a pin to push in this hole and reset the unit. You can also hold the on/off button for 15 seconds but its better to use the reset button. On the 705 the reset buttons is under the battery.

I tried step 2, and I still have the same problem:
3. Connect the Archos to your USB port. If your PC recognizes the Archos, back up your files on your computer and then run Scan Disk on the hard drive. You can run Scan Disk from Windows by going to My Computer. Right click on the drive for your Archos and select Properties. Then go to the Tools tab and beside of Error Checking (first section) press the button 'Check Now'. Let this process run and try to reboot the Archos after it is done.
* OK, I rebooted and it works!

Good!

* I rebooted and still have the same problem!
Turn of your unit and then when you turn it on immediately hold the TV/LCD button to go to the recovery mode options. If you get the recovery screen, then read the next row down entitled 'I rebooted but it starts in recovery mode'. If you do not see the recovery screen, you will need to contact Archos tech support for more assistance.
* I rebooted but it starts in 'recovery mode'

Are you given the 'Repair' option?
Yes
Select 'Repair' and follow the instructions on the screen. If this does not solve the problem, go to the instructions next to 'No' below
No

1. Connect the Archos to your computer if you can and back up any data you need. The reformat option will erase all files and put your system back to the original factory settings.

2. Reboot your Archos, select the FORMAT option and follow the directions.   You may need to go to the Archos web site, download the latest Firmware for your player and put this into the root directory of your unit. Follow the instructions on your Archos exactly and do not touch touch any buttons or disturb the player while it is formatting or repairing.

Please Note: Even if it looks like the unit is doing nothing, it can still be busy repairing and should not be touched for 5-10 minutes during this period.

- My player boots up fine but freezes while using it

Solution 1
a. Make sure the unit is fully charged.
b. Back up all your files.
c. Remove all your Music, video and photo files from the unit (not the firmware files). If this solves the problem, then one or more of your files are corrupt. Add the files back onto the Archos a few at a time to determine which ones are corrupt.

I tried Solution 1, and I still have the same problem:

Solution 2
a. Press the Menu button on the right, then select Settings, then System, then 'Repair and Formatting Tools'
b. Start with the first option, 'Clear temporary system files and cache'.
c. If this doesn't help, try the second option to 'Reset Settings'

I tried Solution 2, and I still have the same problem:
If the above still doesn't help, the only option left is the 3rd and 4th options on the 'Repair and Formatting Tools' screen, which will both format your hard drive. Select option 3 first, then option 4.
You may need to go to the Archos web site, download the latest Firmware for your player and put this into the root directory of your unit. Follow the instructions on your Archos exactly and do not touch touch any buttons or disturb the player while it is formatting or repairing.
Even if it looks like the unit is doing nothing, it can still be busy repairing and should not be touched for 5-10 minutes during this period.

- The buttons on my Gen4 player won't work!

This happens sometimes when you disconnect the player from your computer without selecting 'safe disconnect'. Plug the player back up to your PC, disconnect using the USB icon in the lower right hand corner of your PC monitor (system tray) and disconnect the USB cable. Your player buttons should now work.

- When I use the stylus on the screen, it doesn't react as expected

Push the MENU button on the right, then choose Settings, then Display, then Touch Screen Calibration and follow the instructions to recalibrate the touch screen.

- I can't connect to a Wifi Connection

1. Make sure the connection is not secure or if it is that you have the security key to log on to it.
2. Try resetting the unit with the reset hole on the 605 and the button under the battery on the 705.
- My battery life is too short
Sometimes the battery needs to be refreshed. In order to do this, run your player till its fully dead and turns off. Turn it on and let it even get more discharged and turns off. Do this a couple times until its fully dead and wont even turn on. Fully charge the unit. Use a desktop PC if possible or use an AC outlet if you have an AC charger for the unit, a mini dock, battery dock or the DVR station. These can often give more power to the unit allowing it to charge more fully. Use it normally and allow it to fully discharge again and repeat the above. Do this a couple times and it should increase the battery life of the unit.
- My player is not recognized by my computer

This is a very common problem.
1. Make sure your unit is in Hard Drive Mode. This can be done by going to Menu-System and then change to hard drive mode.
2. You can use the 'auto arc library mode' but if you run into an Arc library issue your unit could freeze. It's always better to update your Arc library manually.

- Arclibrary freezes when its updating and takes a very long time
If you add thousands of files at a time to your player it can take several minutes for the Arclibrary to update. It is recommended that you keep your unit in Manual Arclibrary update mode.  If your arc library update freezes, then you probably have a corrupt file with a bad ID43 tag etc. In this case, remove all your the files that you just added and add them back to the Archos a few at a time until you determine which is the problem file. Once you find it, leave it off of the Archos.
