AV420 SCREEN REPAIR BY DEVON YESBERGER
Replacing a Broken LCD
Screen for the AV420
Tools Needed:
1. Eyeglass screwdriver with both flathead
and Phillips head.
2. A very small t-4 torx screwdriver.
Step 1: Remove the Battery.
Step 2:
On the white sticker under the battery that has instructions for putting
the battery back, poke a whole to the right of the large # Three. This should reveal a screw.
If you can’t find it that way, then just peel off the whole sticker.

NOTE: Going past step 2 will void your
warranty. Any more actions will be
at your own risk.
Step 3: With the battery screw removed, keep
it in its own place because it is different than the next 3 screws we will be
removing. Now remove the 3 screws around the case.
2 by the CF slot, and 1 on the other side.

Step 4: On each of the 4 protective rubber
corners, slowly push upward until you hear a click.
They do not completely come off. They
are attached to the dark blue/black plastic strips on the bottom and top.
Do not push to hard or else they will just crack the plastic.
Just a slow and steady push upward until there is a click and the plastic
is slightly bent.

Step 5: Now take your flathead eyeglass
screwdriver and place it in the notch that is just below the CH in ARCHOS on the
bottom of the front side. The notch
is on the bottom of the case. You
should have the flathead screwdriver parralell to the case.
Now slowly twist the screwdriver around clockwise or counterclockwise,
until the metal case will click off.

Step 6: Repeat Step 5 on the upper notch in
the same place on the top.
Step 7: You should now be able to take off
the front faceplate of the AV420. With done, carefully remove the back
faceplate, and then remove the 2 plastic strips.
You are left with a hunk of electronics.

Step 8: You can see that under the set of
buttons there is a thin metal sheet, carefully pry this out of place, which now
reveals a smaller copper holder that holds the screen in place on the lower
right side. Carefully pull it aside to slip the screen out.

Step 8: Now as you can see, the screen wires
go under the 20gb hard drive, and to remove the hard drive you need a torx
screwdriver. You can also get away
with using the small flathead screwdriver you used to open the case. There are two screws to remove to take off the hard drive. They
are located just under the left side of the screen on the top and bottom.

Step 9: The hard drive should be loose, so
very carefully pull it out of the connectors, now you can see where the main
connector for the screen is.

Step 10: Use your flathead to pry open the
little grey piece where the screen is connected.
It should pop up, and the screen connector should just pull out.

Step 11: Now for the little screen
connector. To remove it kind of pry
and pull on the little plastic thing that is stuck in another plastic thing by
notches, then you can just pull out the small screen connector.

Step 12: Before putting the new screen in,
take the foam lining from the old screen and place it in the same spots on the
new screen. Also, peel off the
large piece of copper tape that was on the back of the old screen protecting the
circuitry and place it on the new screen.

Step 13: Put the new screen connectors in,
but do not put the screen in place yet. Now
put the hard drive back in its connectors, and then screw the torx screws back
in. Now you can slip the screen
under the few notches.
Congratulations! You have just replaced your
LCD screen. To reassemble take note
that this time put the 2 top and bottom plastic strips on. Do not click the protective corners in place, just set them
there so they are able to stay put. Now
click the back faceplate into place, and then the front faceplate, then reattach
all your screws, and put in the battery.
You have a working screen!
